The best thing you can do is go with your friend to the white formal party. Then, start observing the people she hangs ou with--start trying to talk (not about your feelings, yet) to her friends(1 or a few), so you will be introduced and get to know her better. You both are still in 9th grade you have plenty of years to work on a friendship with her. Once you get to know her friends or/and her you will have a better instinct on what to do and how to feel.
