Why Hugh Laurie (Dr. House) is able to speak so well with American accent?

he is a great actor, so is johnny depp, but a lot of them can`t do accents so don`t even bother trying. eg:kevin costner in robin hood,a lot of them just act themselves, and although their films are good their character never changes
